February 12, 2015 - Salem Heritage Neighborhoods
Learn about a new City of Salem program, Salem Heritage Neighborhoods, designed to help neighborhoods recognize and share their historic resources and increase their sense of community. Special guest Sam Skillern, co-chair of Grant Neighborhood Association, the first named Heritage Neighborhood, will share with us how this once-blighted neighborhood has benefited from this new program. We debut a recurring segment, Restoration Tips, information for owners of historic properties.
About Salem History Matters
Deb Meaghers and Christy Van Heukelem share their passion for mid-Willamette Valley history and engage listeners in the value of preserving and blending our rich historic legacy into our contemporary lives. Interviews with area historians, authors, historic property owners, neighbors in our historic districts, curators of local museums, commercial building owners and renovators offer insight into why preserving, living and working in our historic resources are so integral to our sense of community. Adding to the fabric of our heritage quilt are the “Spotlight on History” segments which highlight specific areas of our history, and the “Yesterday’s Voices” segments where our long-time residents share their memories of their lives in the Salem area.
