Boomer Archives 415 - Legendary Songwriters Vol. 02
This weekend (October 2nd & 3rd), we begin a new project - Legendary Songwriters, (Volumes 01 & 02) which reflects the stated mandate of the Boomer Archives - "Timeless storytelling, exploring the milestones of Rock music's most prolific generation".
And they don't come much more legendary than Bob Dylan, kicking things off with "Tangled Up in Blue" from his iconic "Blood On the Tracks" album, followed by John Fogerty with "The Old Man Down the Road" from "Centerfield", then John Lennon's hypnotic "Come Together" from The Beatles' "Abbey Road".
Among the other Legendary Songwriters included - Elton John with the title track from "Too Low for Zero", featuring one of the most beautiful piano passages Elton ever recorded, Joni Mitchell with "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire", a song about drug addiction from Joni's 1972 Asylum Records debut "For the Roses", Neil Young's banjo-infused "For the Turnstiles" from his 1974 album "On the Beach" which morphs into a Stephen Stills' Blues number called "Know You Got to Run" from 1971's "Stephen Stills 2".
Kicking off the second hour is Karla Bonoff with "Trouble Again", from her sophomore album "Restless Nights", followed by "Brilliant Disguise" from Bruce Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love", J.J. Cale's "I Got the Same Old Blues" from his third album "Okie" and "Just Like New", a Jesse Winchester song about fellow Memphis hero Elvis Presley.
We continue with laid back and mellow tunes from Hoyt Axton ("Evangeline" from "Fearless"), Kacey Musgraves ("Someone to Love" from "Pageant Material"), James Taylor ("You Can Close Your Eyes" from "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon"), Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia ("Ripple" from the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty") and John Sebastian ("Rain On the Roof" from the Lovin' Spoonful").
This project will likely extend into multiple weeks.
